American RV frequently receives news releases from the Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan regarding things going on in our area, including scams. We received another one yesterday and felt that we should pass this information on to our extended “family.”
Currently, cyber criminals are posing as FedEx, UPS, and Wal-Mart to trick consumers this holiday season. The BBB is warning consumers to keep their guards up as a new strong of phishing e-mails are making their rounds this holiday season.
Hackers and scammers are pretending to be customer service reps from these big companies (specifically retailers and shipping companies) to earn your trust and gain access to computer drives, and files and accounts to steal personal information.
Some examples are:
1.A message currently hitting people’s inboxes has the subject as: “Tracking Number 13040065504.” The body of the email states that they tried to deliver a package to you, but couldn’t and the invoice is the added file (so you can see what you “ordered.”) This attachment is actually a virus and will infect your computer if opened. If you get an email like this, and would like to confirm whether there is a shipping problem with your package, call the shipping company directly.
2.Phishing emails are also going around that are survey from places like Wal-Mart offering to credit your account $90 for taking a survey. In the end, there is a link that takes you to a website that again, phishes for information. Again, if you get this… just delete it.
Consumers who receive suspicious e-mails should report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
